Not Many Girls Played Kabaddi in Pali: Sanju Devi’s Journey to World Cup MVP
Sanju Devi’s story is one of courage, persistence, and a belief that she could rewrite the expectations set before her. Raised in Kerakachhar village in the Pali block of Chhattisgarh’s Korba district, Sanju grew up as the daughter of a rice farmer, far removed from the spotlight of professional sports. Yet in November 2025, she stood at the centre of global attention as the Most Valuable Player of the Women’s Kabaddi World Cup in Dhaka.
A Difficult Decision at Seventeen
At 17, Sanju faced a defining choice. Her family needed financial security, and the most practical path would have been to complete her education and find a job. But her heart was already invested in Kabaddi, a sport she first discovered in Class V at her government school. What began as a recreational activity soon revealed her natural talent, speed, and exceptional reflexes.
Despite limited opportunities for girls in her region and a lack of sporting infrastructure, Sanju decided to pursue Kabaddi wholeheartedly. It was a risk for a young girl from a remote village, but one she believed could change her life.
A Decade of Determination
Over the next eight years, Sanju trained relentlessly, overcoming financial constraints, societal expectations, and the scarcity of professional guidance. Her breakthrough came as she began representing her state and later earned a place in the national setup. Her performances gained momentum, marked by her agility, discipline, and ability to lift team morale during crucial moments.
A Historic World Cup Victory
On November 24, 2025, India clinched their second Women's Kabaddi World Cup title in Dhaka, defeating formidable opponents throughout the tournament. Sanju emerged as a standout performer, driving India’s campaign with unmatched consistency. Her defensive brilliance and swift raids played a pivotal role in multiple matches.
The tournament concluded with Sanju receiving the prestigious MVP award, a honour recognising not only her skill but her perseverance through years of adversity.
A Role Model for Rural Aspirants
Sanju’s achievement has sparked pride across Chhattisgarh, especially in areas where sports opportunities remain limited. Her journey proves that talent can rise from the most unexpected places when supported by determination and belief. She has now become an inspiration for young girls in regions where participation in sports is still overshadowed by social and economic challenges.
