Modi to Brief Media as Winter Session Opens Amid Rising Tensions

As the Winter Session of Parliament commences, anticipation is high for a charged start marked by intense political debate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to brief the media at Hans Dwar in Parliament House ahead of the inaugural proceedings of the Sixth Session of the Eighteenth Lok Sabha.

The session is expected to be stormy, with Opposition parties presenting a united front during the all-party meeting held on Sunday. Their primary demand centers on holding a detailed discussion in the House on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders have warned that they may disrupt parliamentary proceedings if the government does not consent to a debate on the matter.

However, the government has indicated that such a discussion is unlikely. Officials clarified that the SIR process is an administrative function conducted by the Election Commission—an independent constitutional body—making it outside the purview of government accountability within Parliament.

The all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also highlighted several other issues raised by the Opposition. These include calls for discussions on the recent blast near the Red Fort, escalating air pollution across major cities, and developments related to India’s foreign policy.

With both sides holding firm on their positions, the Winter Session opens under an atmosphere of heightened political friction. All eyes are now on Parliament as it navigates critical national discussions amid widening government-Opposition divides.
